Victoria & Verdi: Two National Icons

Victoria & Verdi: Two National Icons

Queen Victoria and Giuseppe Verdi had much in common: Victoria learned Italian and loved music and opera, while Verdi cared deeply about the politics of Italian unification. Drawing on a rich multiplicity of images, Daniel Snowman examines the changing iconography of the two ‘V’s’ against the background of their wider national cultural history.

Daniel Snowman is a social and cultural historian who worked at the BBC for many years where he was responsible for a wide variety of radio series on cultural and historical topics.
